OWERRI MAGISTRATE COURT ORDERS REMAND OF 38-YEAR OLD IMO WOMAN OVER ALLEGED PEELING OFF MAID’S HAND, BURNING OF PRIVATE PARTS.

A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Owerri, Imo State, has ordered the remand of a 38-year-old businesswoman, Juliet Igwe, at the Owerri Correctional Centre following allegations of severe abuse against a five-year-old girl under her care.
The defendant was arraigned by the Imo State Police Command on a one-count charge bordering on attempted murder, arising from accusations that the minor suffered serious injuries while in her custody at Oha, Ideato North Local Government Area.
A journalist and human rights advocate, Chidiebube Okeoma, who was present in court, disclosed that the matter was brought before the court by the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma. Okeoma, whose organisation, Stand For Humanity Foundation, rescued the child, stated that the prosecution alleged the offence is punishable under Section 320 of the Criminal Code applicable in Imo State.
During the proceedings, the police prosecutor, S.O. Obodo, informed the court that the offence carries a possible life sentence upon conviction and urged the court to remand the accused, noting that the Magistrate Court lacks jurisdiction to hear the substantive matter.
When questioned by the court, the accused reportedly admitted to the act but claimed she did not anticipate the extent of harm caused.
In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, B.U. Adikibe, agreed with the prosecution that the offence is a serious felony beyond the court’s jurisdiction. She consequently ordered that the accused be remanded at the Owerri Correctional Facility and directed that the case file be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
The court adjourned the matter to February 5, 2026, for an update on the DPP’s response.
The accused was not represented by counsel, while Miriam Ogbu appeared on behalf of the Imo State Ministry of Justice.
Also present in court was the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Vulnerable Groups, Lady Nkechi Ugwu, who assured that the matter would be escalated to the Wife of the Governor, Barrister Chioma Uzodimma, noting her interest in the protection of children and vulnerable persons.
The Stand For Humanity Foundation disclosed that it rescued the child on December 2 from Osina, Ideato North LGA, facilitated the arrest of the suspect, and ensured the minor was admitted to the Imo State University Teaching Hospital, Owerri, where she is currently receiving medical care.
Medical reports, according to the foundation, indicate that the child will require corrective medical procedures due to the injuries sustained. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing justice and ensuring the child’s full recovery and protection.
Ebonyi State Police Command Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Ogbon-Inu Taiwo Popoola, has reportedly died after he slumped during a management meeting at the office of the Commissioner of Police on Tuesday.
He was immediately rushed to the Police Medical Centre at the command’s Headquarters in Abakaliki. Despite all efforts, however, he was confirmed dead by doctors.
Preliminary medical findings indicated that the cause of death was cardiac arrest, secondary to hypertensive heart disease.
The Command’s spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the death on Thursday.
He said, “He had a crisis during a meeting and was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, he didn’t survive. He was not sick before the incident. If he were sick, he wouldn’t have attended the meeting”
The Imo State Police Command has commenced an orderly room trial of three inspectors, one sergeant and three constables alleged to have engaged in unprofessional conduct, ranging from extortion to high-handedness towards members of the public.
In a press statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, it was stated that the trial followed the identification of the personnel by complainants, which led to their arrest and subsequent investigation.
He said that orderly room trial proceedings have therefore been initiated against the personnel, whose names were given as Inspector Eyo Udo of the Anti-Vice Unit; Inspector Peter Nweke of the Rapid Response Squad; and Inspector Ita Asuquo of Operation Search and Flush.
Others include Sergeant Chukwuka Ekwueme of the Anti-Vice Unit and the trio of Police Constables Onuwa Samuel, Patchris David and Amos Sunny, all of the Anti-Vice Unit.
“Notably, some of the personnel were captured in a viral video depicting an alleged extortion incident involving operatives attached to a Joint Task Force, JTF operation, at Seven-and-a-Half Junction, Obowo, including the other sister agencies whose personnel have been handed over to their various agencies for disciplinary action.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma assures members of the public that the disciplinary process will be thorough, transparent, and in accordance with the Nigeria Police Force regulations and the outcome of the trial will be made public.”
Okoye urged members of the public to continue to report acts of misconduct by police personnel via the Command’s Complaints Response Unit, CRU, on 08148024755, 08068923224 and 08134783532.

Former Governor of Anambra State, Senator Chris Ngige, stormed the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus meeting, barely hours after he left the Kuje prison.
Senator Ngige, who was the immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, was recently remanded in Kuje prison following corruption allegations against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The former governor was granted bail earlier on Thursday, and he was able to fulfil the bail conditions.
Ngige arrived at the State House Conference Centre after the president had arrived, and he was stopped by security for a while before he was finally cleared to join others.
His arrival attracted cheers from some presidential aides.
