‘Prioritize national security’ – Nigerians in US urge Tinubu to release Abba Kyari
A coalition of Nigerian groups in the United States has called on President Bola Tinubu to grant a presidential pardon to DCP Abba Kyari, citing his vast expertise in combating insecurity.
They coalition described his continued incarceration as a major loss to national security efforts.
Speaking through a joint statement issued on Tuesday, Professor Emakoji Ayikoye, lead coordinator of the coalition, described Kyari as “a critical national asset whose unique skills are desperately needed” in the fight against escalating insecurity and terrorism across the country.
“DCP Kyari’s track record in tackling violent crimes, insurgency, and kidnapping using modern technology and strategic policing is unmatched in Nigeria’s recent history,” Ayikoye said.
“After over three years of incarceration without conviction, it is time to ask: can the nation afford to sideline such a talent at this critical moment?”
The group insists that Kyari’s detention has been politicized, describing it as “a clear setup driven by envy and internal vendettas”.
“The fact that he remains in prison over a bailable allegation, while others with more grievous allegations walk free, reveals the political undertone of his ordeal,” Ayikoye stated.
“We are not saying justice should be compromised, but justice should not become a weapon of exclusion either.”
The association drew parallels with global political figures who have retained influence or received strategic exemptions despite legal issues.
Among the examples cited are Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who continues to hold office amid serious criminal charges, citing his leadership as vital in Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas
US President Donald Trump, convicted on multiple felony counts and with multiple state and federal indictments but still retaining political relevance and electoral power and was voted into power as President by majority of Americans
Ahmed al-Sharaa, former leader of the extremist group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), whose designation was reversed by the US in 2025 due to shifting geopolitical priorities in Syria.
“What these cases demonstrate is that in times of national crisis, nations often make pragmatic decisions. When survival is at stake, law and politics can no longer be viewed in isolation,” Ayikoye noted.
The group is urging President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima to act with “strategic leadership”, advocating a presidential pardon not necessarily as a statement of innocence, but as a calculated move to restore Kyari to service.
“A presidential pardon, in this context, is not about absolution—it is about national Security interest. The safety and stability of Nigeria should take precedence over legal rigidity. Kyari has already paid a significant price. The nation should now leverage his capacity.”
They added that Kyari’s return to service could serve as a “turning point” in the fight against insecurity, especially as kidnappings, terrorism and banditry continue to rise across the country.
“At this point in our history, Nigeria can not afford to ignore men of Kyari’s caliber. His release and reinstatement could send a bold message that the nation is serious about tackling its security problems head-on,” Ayikoye concluded.
The group has formally submitted a petition to the Nigerian Embassy in Washington D.C., requesting that it be forwarded to the Presidency.

ALAOJI PLANT RETURNS TO NATIONAL GRID
Alaoji Plant Returns To National Grid
The Niger Delta Power Holding Company has restored the 450-megawatt Alaoji Open Cycle Power Plant in Abia State after it remained shut for three years.
The facility had stopped operations due to gas supply problems, debt issues and disagreements over metering.
The shutdown had affected output from the national grid for more than 36 months.
Officials explained that efforts were made to resolve the long-running disputes and stabilise gas supply before restarting operations at the plant.
The restoration is also expected to support businesses and industries relying on stable electricity.
The Alaoji facility is one of the major power plants in the country and plays a role in boosting energy distribution across several regions.
Its return comes as authorities continue pushing for better electricity generation nationwide.
