Rivers: Fubara-led PDP reacts as governor’s supporters dump party for ADC
Suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara has lost several supporters and loyalists to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, recently adopted by opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections, Ekwutosblog learnt.
A source said the supporters have shifted their loyalty to the former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, who is aspiring for the ADC presidential ticket.
ADC was officially launched in the state on July 23, with Amaechi and other top opposition leaders storming Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital for the event.
“There was a massive defection from the governor’s camp especially in PDP to the ADC.
“With the information I got recently, the governor upon his return will also dump PDP but it is not clear yet if he will be joining the coalition or the ruling party in the country”, the source said.
However, when contacted by Ekwutosblog, Sydney Gbara, the Publicity Secretary of the Fubara-led faction of the PDP in Rivers State, said they remain in PDP until the governor says otherwise.
“For now, the governor has not told me or anybody that we will be joining the coalition. So we are very much in PDP.
“If the governor comes up today and says we are joining the coalition or APC, I will follow him”, he said.
Addressing the defection of some of the governor’s supporters and loyalists, Sydney simply said it is a matter of choice.
According to him, “politics is a matter of choice, people are free to take their support to wherever they want to. But there are others who are looking up to their leaders. Whatever he does is what they do.
“Many of us have decided to be with the governor and whatever interests he shares, will be our interests too”.
Ekwutosblog reports that Governor Fubara, who was suspended on March 18, 2025, alongside his deputy and all state legislators over unmanaged crisis in his state, is expected to return next month (September).

State House of Assembly suspends Local Govt chairman
The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Lafia Local Government, Mohammad Haliru Arabo, for three months over his role in the unlawful removal of the council’s Speaker.
The decision was taken during plenary in Lafia after a motion was raised by Musa Ibrahim Abubakar, who leads the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Lawmakers agreed that the action was needed to allow a fair investigation and calm the tension that followed the leadership dispute in the council.
The Speaker of the House, Danladi Jatau, said the suspension will stand until the committee completes its findings.
He said that the current structure of the Lafia Legislative Arm will remain unchanged throughout the investigation.
During this period, the Deputy Chairman of Lafia Local Government, Uba Arikiya, has been directed to take charge of the council.
The Speaker explained that the House acted within the powers given to it by the constitution and questioned why the Chairman ventured into matters that belong to the legislature.
The Clerk of the House has been asked to notify Governor Abdullahi Sule of the resolution.
Lawmakers such as Hajarat Danyaro Ibrahim, Mohammed Garba Isimbabi, Suleiman Yakubu Azara, and Larry Ven-Bawa backed the move, saying that the suspension would help prevent a wider crisis in the council and send a clear message to other local governments in the state.
