The Headquarters of the 81 Division, Nigerian Army, has provided preliminary clarification on the tragic incident circulating in a viral video, involving the death of a soldier in the Ikorodu general area of Lagos State. Although a full investigation is ongoing, the Division deemed it necessary to outline the initial findings surrounding the unfortunate event.
According to early reports, the incident occurred on 16 November 2025 at approximately 4:00 pm. A soldier deployed for internal security operations in the Imota axis of Ikorodu attempted to calm a chaotic situation that was rapidly escalating. While carrying out his duty to restore order, he was unexpectedly assaulted by a mentally unstable individual who struck him on the head with a heavy log. The impact caused severe injuries.
Other soldiers at the scene immediately intervened, neutralizing the attacker and recovering the soldier’s rifle to prevent further escalation. The wounded soldier was promptly transported to the Ikorodu General Hospital, but despite urgent medical attention, he was pronounced dead. In accordance with Islamic burial rites, he was laid to rest with the Acting Commanding Officer and several officers of his unit present to honor his service.
The 81 Division has since expressed deep condolences to the soldier’s family, colleagues, and all who mourn his passing. The Army acknowledged his dedication, bravery, and sacrifice in the service of national security, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
In response to the tragic event, the Division has launched a formal investigation to unravel every detail surrounding the attack. Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and avoid spreading unverified information. The Army also appealed for responsible media coverage to allow the investigative process to proceed without disruption.
