Serie A: Why ex-Man Utd midfielder, McTominay is doing well at Napoli – Conte

Published

on

Napoli manager, Antonio Conte has suggested that midfielder, Scott McTominay is doing well at the club because he gave him a ‘main role’ in his team.

Recall that McTominay was signed by Napoli in a £25.7 million deal from Man United last summer.

The Scotland international has been an immediate hit in Serie A, scoring 11 goals and providing two assists so far this season.

McTominay struggled to establish his best midfield role since making his first-team breakthrough for Man United in 2017.

The 28-year-old scored only seven goals for Man United in his final season with the Red Devils before he was sold.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of Napoli’s Serie A clash with Lecce on Saturday, Conte said: “I have always said that you have to find solutions in the search for goals.

“When there is this type of situation you have to find a cooperative and tactical solutions, even for improvement.

“I think McTominay is stronger today than when he arrived from United. Here he has grown a lot.

“I think that he, himself, feels stronger, with more knowledge, that he is also reaching an important stage of his age to understand where to go in his career because up to now he has been in the middle, he has never had a main role at United that instead we have given him here, he has grown a lot by working, today he is complete.”

2026 WCQ: I didn’t like it – Tuchel slams England players despite 1-0 win over Andorra

England manager, Thomas Tuchel, has revealed he did not like the “lack or urgency” from his players following a narrow 1-0 win over Andorra.

Harry Kane scored the only goal of the game in the 2026 World Cup qualifier on Saturday.

But Tuchel was unhappy with the performance and accused the players of not trying hard enough after 25 minutes.

According to him, the players were left in no doubt as to his opinion of their display against the minnows.

“I think we started quite well in the first 20-25 minutes, that was the only part where I had the feeling it was a matter of time,” he told ITV Sport.

“We lost completely the momentum [and] couldn’t get it back through the whole first half.

Tuchel added: “It is still a World Cup qualifier away from home. I didn’t like it at all.

“All the players know because I said it in the dressing room.

“It is also necessary to have a look in detail and watch the match again.”

Since he took over the team, Tuchel has won all three fixtures so far, as the post-Gareth Southgate era continues to take shape.

Former France winger, Franck Ribery, appeared to hit out at Cristiano Ronaldo’s latest comments on the Ballon d’Or award, seemingly expressing his bitterness at missing out in 2013.

Ribery took to social media on Saturday, to question Ronaldo’s comments on what the criteria to win the award should be.

Speaking to reporters, Ronaldo suggested that Ousmane Dembele should win this year’s Ballon d’Or, as he has won the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain.

“The individual awards have lost some consensus; I can’t say anything about who should win. In my opinion, those who stand out and win the Champions League should win,” Ronaldo said.

Despite winning the Champions League in the 2012-13 season with Bayern, Ribery finished third in the 2013 Ballon d’Or rankings behind Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Now, following Ronaldo’s latest comments, Ribery took to social media and posted: “So you NEED to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d’Or?”
