STEPS TO BECOME a SAN IN NIGERIA

•LL.B (Bachelor of Laws)

First, you must obtain a Law degree from a recognized university.

•Nigerian Law School & Call to Bar

Attend Law School and be called to the Bar as a Barrister & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

•Legal Practice

Begin practicing law, usually in litigation (courtroom practice) because SAN is mostly awarded to advocates who handle important cases in courts.

•Years of Experience

You must have at least 10–15 years of active legal practice.
Within this period, you must handle substantial and significant cases, especially in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

•Contribution to Legal Development

– You must contribute to the growth of the legal profession through:

Writing and publishing legal works.

Taking part in reforms or legal education.

Doing pro bono (free legal services) for the public.

•. Meet LPPC Requirements

The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) is the body that awards SAN.
They check: The number and quality of cases you have done.

Your character and integrity.

Your contribution to law and society.

• Apply for SAN

Once you meet all the requirements, you can apply.

LPPC will conduct a thorough screening and interview.

•Conferment Ceremony

If approved, you will be formally conferred as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in a special ceremony.

SAN is the highest rank for advocates in Nigeria, similar to Queen’s Counsel (QC/KC) in the UK.
