Supreme Court angry over mischievous reports against justices, judiciary.

The Supreme Court has once again issued a stern warning against the dissemination of falsehoods and mischievous reports targeted at justices on its bench and the judiciary as an institution.

The apex court, on Saturday, reiterated that it will no longer tolerate the deliberate propagation of untruths intended to undermine the integrity of individual justices and the judiciary.

Apparently responding to a narrative circulating on social media, which alleged that one of its justices travelled to Benin City in relation to a political case recently filed before the court, the Supreme Court urged commentators on judicial matters to always exercise responsibility, discretion, and restraint in their remarks.

A statement issued on Saturday and signed by Dr Festus Akande, Director of Information and Public Relations of the Supreme Court, expressed displeasure over the spread of falsehoods on social media concerning the Justice in question.

The statement read in part: “The attention of the Supreme Court has been drawn to a disturbing and false narrative being circulated on social media and certain online platforms alleging that a justice of the Supreme Court travelled to Benin City on account of a political case recently filed before the court.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Honourable Justice in question travelled to Benin City on Thursday, 12th June, 2025 to attend the funeral rites of the late mother of Mr. Hannibal Uwaifo, a senior member of the Bar and immediate past President of the African Bar Association.

“Prior to the journey, the said justice formally sought and obtained permission from the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria to embark on the trip. This private visit was strictly for the purposes of condolence and bereavement as is customary and humane.

“The Honourable Justice neither attended any political meeting nor solicited for inclusion on any panel as falsely alleged. In fact, apart from the funeral service held at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and a brief stop at the service of songs, the Honourable Justice retired to his hotel room without attending any further gatherings or receptions.

“The image being circulated purportedly as evidence merely shows the justice returning alone to his hotel, hardly a basis for the sensational claims being peddled.

“The Supreme Court wishes to state unequivocally that this sort of baseless speculation and malicious conjecture, especially when publicly propagated by persons who ought to know better, is not only unhelpful but also deeply harmful to the integrity of the Judiciary.

“We strongly urge members of the public, especially commentators on judicial matters to exercise responsibility and discretion. Where there is any doubt or lack of clarity, the appropriate step is to seek verification from the Supreme Court through its official communication channels rather than resorting to the spread of falsehoods aimed at maligning the image of the justices or bringing the judiciary into disrepute.

“The judiciary remains committed to upholding the rule of law and will not be distracted by deliberate attempts to undermine its credibility.”

The IGP has tasked the NPF Pensions Limited to urgently examine the claims, identify any possible lapses, and ensure that appropriate action is taken to address the concerns raised.

‎The Nigeria Police Force is not insensitive to the plight of its pensioners, many of whom dedicated their lives to the service and safety of our nation. The IGP views the welfare of both serving and retired officers as a priority and recognizes that timely and adequate pension administration is crucial to sustaining morale and institutional integrity. Taraba Assembly dismisses impeachment rumours, confirms Deputy Gov recuperating

The Taraba State House of Assembly has dismissed circulating rumours of an alleged plot to impeach the Deputy Governor, Aminu Alkali.
The House, also affirmed that Alkali is steadily recovering from an undisclosed illness.

Addressing journalists in Jalingo, the state capital, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Nelson C. Len, said the 24-member Assembly had no plans to replace Alkali with the current Deputy Speaker or any other individual.

Len described the rumours as baseless and misleading, urging the public to disregard any claims suggesting the Assembly is considering removing the deputy governor from office.

“The health situation of the deputy governor is not in any way comparable to that of the late former Governor Danbaba Suntai, who suffered fatal injuries from a plane crash. Alhaji Alkali is responding to treatment and recuperating well,” Len stated.

He further clarified that the House has not constituted any medical panel to assess Alkali’s health, insisting that there is no justification for such action at this time.

Alkali, who has been absent from public functions for more than nine months, was recently flown back to Nigeria from Egypt and is reportedly receiving medical care in a hospital in Abuja.

His extended absence, as noticed by Ekwutosblog, had fueled speculation about his condition and prompted concerns over a possible leadership vacuum.

However, the Assembly reassured citizens that there is no constitutional crisis and that the leadership of the state remains stable.

Dangote Sugar, Oando, other stocks push NGX to N1.185tn gains

Oando, Dangote Sugar and other stocks have propelled Nigerian Exchange Limited, known as the Nigerian Stock Market, to a significant N1.185 trillion single-day gain.

Accordingly, NGX market capitalisation increased by 1.57 percent to reach N76.761 trillion, up from N75.576 trillion recorded on Tuesday.

Similarly, the All-Share Index (ASI) rose by 1,466.87 points, or 1.22 percent, settling at 121,257.69 from its previous close of 119,790.82.

Other stocks that fueled the bullish run on Wednesday are Cileasing, Champion Breweries, and 59 other stocks.

Consequently, Ekwutosblog reports that market breadth closed positive, with 63 gainers and 17 losers.

On the gainers’ table, Dangote Sugar rose by 10 percent, closing at N48.40, while Oando Plc also increased by 10 percent, settling at N68.75 per share. Then, Cileasing grew by 9.98 percent, finishing at N5.18, and Champion Breweries soared by 9.98 percent, ending the session at N10.91 per share.

 

Also, Computer Warehouse Group gained by 9.95 percent, closing at N11.60 per share.

Meanwhile, conversely, University Press dropped by 6.25 percent, finishing at N6.00, while RT Briscoe fell by 6.12 percent, closing at N2.30 per share.

Multiverse Mining declined by 4.89 percent, settling at N8.75, and Meyer shed 4.69 percent, ending the session at N9.15 per share.

In another level of analysis, a total of 861.67 million shares worth N26.18 billion were exchanged across 22,896 transactions.

This is compared to 868.68 million shares worth N23.71 billion that were traded across 22,207 transactions earlier.

Market data showed that transactions in the shares of Fidelity Bank topped the activity chart with 82.98 million shares worth N1.66 billion. Accordingly, Caverton Offshore Support Group followed with 64.18 million shares valued at N319.69 million, while Zenith Bank transacted 60.62 million shares worth N3.45 billion.

Also, Ja Paul Gold traded 56.26 million shares valued at N115.35 million, and Access Corporation sold 48.59 million shares worth N1.12 billion.
