Three years old girl electrocuted by fallen cable in Anambra

Published

on

A-three-year old girl, Faiza Mohammed, was on Saturday electrocuted by a fallen high tension cable belonging to Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) in Awka, Anambra State.

A source said the high tension cable snapped and fell on Friday at Isaiah Morah close, Awka.

The source said residents of the area contacted the power distribution company to evacuate the cable, but they allegedly ignored the complaint.

A resident of the area said: “EEDC officials who were contacted demanded the sum of N30,000 to fix the problem and after the money was paid, they still did not come.

“The wire fell on Friday, 22nd May, 2025 and it was only fixed on Sunday, 24th May, 2025 after it had electrocuted the girl.”

It was learnt that residents of the area were enraged that they didn’t have electricity supply, assuming that the EEDC had cut off power to the street because of the incident, not knowing what the cable on the street had power on it.

The source said two EEDC! officials who spoke on condition of anonymity contradicted each other on the matter.

“One claimed that the incident was posted on their WhatsApp group and a team was dispatched to immediately respond but they couldn’t locate the place. After allegedly trying their best, they went back to the office.

“The second official admitted that the issue was posted on their WhatsApp group but that the Imo’awka masquerade festival that took place on Saturday, 23rd May, 2025 made it impossible to respond on Saturday.”

The residents rejected the claims.

One of them, Mrs Christiana said: “Isaiah Morah is along the Enugu-Onitsha Federal Highway by Udoka Housing Estate. Without exception, all EEDC customers here are on prepaid meters and we have specific officials servicing this area. Our transformer is one of the ones serving Udoka, how could anyone claim that they could not locate here?”

On the issue of the masquerade festival, she said “It is a big fat lie. People weren’t harassed, I even attended a wedding at St Joseph the Worker after returning from Eke Awka market. They’re lying because they murdered this girl with their negligence.”

The little Faiza Mohammed is a three years old girl who lives with her mother and other people in a house under construction in the street.

They usually go out to fetch water from other compounds and not knowing that the cable on the road had power, the innocent girl went near it and was electrocuted.

When other children saw what happened, they shouted and the adults who responded carefully pulled her off, rushing her to Awka Medical Center at Udoka gate but she didn’t make it.

Efforts to reach EEDC officials for response were not successful as at the time of filing this report.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate arrest of the owner of a multi-story hotel that collapsed in Jikwoyi, Abuja last Friday, April 4 and announced that the land would be seized for public use.

LIB had reported that the building crumbled while workers were on site, triggering an emergency response from relevant authorities.

Visiting the site today April 7, Wike said the building was constructed without approval from the FCT Department of Development Control and that all the stop-work notices sent to the builders were ignored by the developer.

Wike confirmed that while there were no fatalities, several people sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. He warned that the outcome could have been far worse.

Announcing the government’s plans for the land, Wike said the FCT Administration will take over the land for public use, noting that those responsible for the illegal construction will face prosecution in accordance with the law.

He added that the local community would be consulted to determine a suitable public-purpose project for the reclaimed site.
