Unmasking the Reality: Imo State’s Infrastructure Deficit By Hon. Success Opara, ADC Owerri Municipal

The Assumpta flyover, a recent addition to Imo State’s infrastructure landscape, has sparked a mix of emotions among citizens. While it’s a notable achievement, it raises critical questions about the state government’s priorities and commitment to balanced development.

The Glaring Disparity

The existence of a single flyover in the state, situated at Assumpta Cathedral, starkly contrasts with the deplorable road conditions in local government areas. This disparity highlights the government’s neglect of rural infrastructure, which is essential for economic growth and citizens’ well-being.

The Rural-Urban Divide

A government genuinely interested in building Imo State’s economy would prioritize developing rural areas, where the majority of citizens reside. Instead, the focus on high-profile projects in urban areas perpetuates the rural-urban divide, hindering the state’s overall progress.

The Impact on Farmers and the Economy

Deplorable roads in local government areas significantly affect farmers’ ability to transport goods to markets, increasing costs and reducing economic activity. This issue is particularly pressing given the recent fuel subsidy intervention by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at cushioning the effects of the fuel hike.

We urge the Imo State government to:

1. Prioritize rural road development : Fixing local government roads is crucial for facilitating economic activity and improving citizens’ lives.
2. Distribute infrastructure development evenly : Multiple flyovers and infrastructure projects across the 27 local government areas would help reduce the current disparity.
3. Engage with local communities : The government should work closely with local government chairmen, members, and citizens to identify priority areas for infrastructure development.

The Vision of Renewed Hope

By addressing the infrastructure deficit and prioritizing rural development, Imo State can unlock its economic potential and create a more balanced growth trajectory. It’s time for the government to bring the vision of renewed hope to reality by investing in the people and infrastructure that matter most.
