Video: Sonko rescues another woman beaten by her boxer boyfriend
Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has sustained the fight against Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the country.
Barely two days after his own daughter, Salma Sonko, was assaulted by her boyfriend, the former county boss has stepped up to lead a campaign against domestic violence.
On Tuesday, November 18, Sonko received a distress call from a Mombasa-based woman asking for help after her sister was assaulted by her boyfriend, a renowned boxer in the Coastal city.
Sonko asked to speak to the victim, who identified herself as Zuhura.
She claimed her boyfriend stormed into their rented house at around 10 pm and started assaulting her over KSh 16k he lent her in 2022.
“He banged the door and entered the house because I had not locked it. He demanded KSh 16k that he lent me in 2022. I promised to pay him the following day and offered to surrender some of my household to him if I failed to clear the whole amount…I even told him to take everything apart from the bed,” narrated Zuhura.
The boyfriend did not take any of her offers; he proceeded to assault her and eject her from the house, where she said they shared rent expenses.
She reported the matter to the Bamburi Police Station. According to a police officer who spoke with Sonko on the phone, Zuhura was forced out of her house unprepared and arrived at the station partially dressed.
Zuhura claimed she had been assaulted before in February 2023, but they reconciled even after reporting the incident and getting an OB.
“He doesn’t want her to work, yet she is the one who pays bills and feeds him. He has nothing, so Zuhura has to work to provide for him,” said Zuhura’s sister.
She claimed the boyfriend, who relocated to Mombasa from an Arab nation, has a habit of assaulting her sister whenever he gets drunk.
“He gets drunk and turns violent. Zuhura has had enough and wants him to leave. He has assaulted her not once, not twice. This is the third OB we are recording against him,” she said.
Sonko advised the woman to seek treatment and fill out a P3 form to pave the way for police arrest and investigation.
“I will pay for your treatment if you can’t afford it. Take the P3 form, fill it out and return it to the police for action. I will also refund the money you owe him. I’m sending it now, but ensure you have filled out the P3 form. We want that man to be arrested now,” said Sonko.
