Why there’s increase in terrorism, banditry – Peterside

Published

on

President of ANAP Foundation and Founder of IBTC Bank, Atedo Peterside, has stated why there is a surge of terrorism and banditry in Nigeria.

Fielding questions on ‘Prime Time’, a programme on Arise Television monitored by Ekwutosblog on Monday, Peterside said some poor people can be easily recruited into banditry and terrorism because of their poor condition.

He said that Nigeria has an income distribution problem, adding that the nation has the very wealthy and phenomenally poor.

“Sometimes you can have an economy where the big guns are doing very well, their income is going up in the stock market and all, but I’m referring to the 140 million poor people. That’s where the problem is. And I think Nigeria has, clearly has an income distribution problem.

“We have the very wealthy, and we have the phenomenally poor, and you cannot have equilibrium when there are so many poor people around you. That’s why I wouldn’t say I’m frightened, but I pinch myself when I see wealthy people believe that everything will be fine forever, and around them, there are hundreds of millions of people who are poor.

“I don’t want to equate poverty with insecurity, banditry or things like that, but I think it’s obvious that for the bandits, for the terrorist poor people, whom the state is offering next to nothing, some of them can be easily recruited. So, they become the potential future bandits and the future terrorists.

Also, we have 30 million children out of school. People who are not educated are increasingly difficult to integrate into a modern economy. So if they can’t do a proper job, they also become targets for bandits and terrorists. We have a serious problem on hand. So how can the President sit pretty,” he asked.

The Chairman, Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Linus Nto Mbah has condemned the recent statement of former Abia Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, where  he said that Governor Alex Otti is only repainting the roads he (Kalu) built.

Eze Nto Mbah, who was also reacting to the Abia North North Senator’s vow to stop the re-election of Governor Alex Otti in  2027,  alleged that plots are on to terminate ongoing transformation in Abia.

He also condemned the recent meeting convened by former Governors of Abia State at the residence of former Governor Theodore Orji, describing the meeting as  conspiracies to stop Otti’s re-election.

He further alleged  that there are plots by opposition politicians to bring back the  years of unpaid salaries,  pensions and dilapidated hospitals, but declared that Governor Otti will record a landslide victory despite the alleged conspiracy.

Eze Mbah noted particularly, that the Umuahia -Uzuakoli Akara-Alayi-Abiriba road that leads to Igbere, the home town of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu was completely reconstructed by Governor Alex Otti, and wondered why Orji Uzor Kalu could have said that Governor Otti is just repainting roads.

“How could Orji Uzor Kalu have claimed that Governor Alex Otti is just repainting roads in Abia State, even when Otti completely reconstructed Umuahia-Uzuokali-Akara-Alayi-Abiriba road that leads to Igbere, the home town of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

“Do they want to take us back to the days of owing salaries and pensions, time of infrastructural decay and abandonment of our healthcare and education system? It will not work,” Eze Mbah stated.

The monarch who cautioned politicians against violent statements, said that their “closed-door” meetings against Governor Otti will not succeed.
