Your Salary is Protected by Law even your Employer cannot deduct at Will

Let’s talk about something many employees don’t realize your salary is not a favor from your employer; it’s your legal right.

The law protects workers’ wages. The Labour Act clearly states that your employer cannot just wake up one morning and decide to deduct money from your salary because they’re annoyed, or because you came late, or even because of a “mistake” they claim you made. Every deduction must have a legal backing or your written consent.

  • Deductions like tax (PAYE), pension, or union dues are lawful because they are recognized by law.
  •  But deductions like “lateness fee,” “negligence fine,” or “company loss contribution” are not automatic. The employer must follow due process, and you must agree to such terms usually in your employment contract.

Let’s say your boss slashes 10,000 Naira from your salary because you were late three times. If there’s no clause in your employment letter allowing that, it’s illegal. You can challenge it.

Even where disciplinary deductions are allowed, they must be reasonable, proportionate, and documented. The law frowns at employers acting as both judge and executioner.

Also, employers cannot delay your salary endlessly. The law says your wage must be paid promptly after each pay period. If your boss keeps owing you for months without reason, that’s a breach of your employment rights.

Always remember, your salary is not “at the mercy” of your employer it’s earned. And the law protects every kobo of it because when you give your time, skill, and effort to your job, you deserve to be treated fairly and lawfully not shortchanged.
