Relief has come to families and the wider public following the successful rescue of 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps who were abducted in Imo State on October 1, 2026.

The victims were rescued on Wednesday, October 7, at Amakohia Ubi Village in Imo State after several days of coordinated search-and-rescue operations involving the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.

The development represents a significant breakthrough in the security operation launched after the prospective corps members were abducted while travelling through the state. The operation reportedly involved sustained efforts to trace the victims and locate the criminal elements responsible for their abduction.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the rescued victims have been taken to a medical facility for assessment and the necessary care following their ordeal.

The rescue operation followed days of intensive searches around forested areas along the Owerri-Onitsha Road, where security operatives had been working to establish the whereabouts of the abducted persons.

The operation was coordinated on the ground by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, Shehu Umar Nadada, following the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

Security sources had earlier indicated that drone surveillance was deployed during the operation and had helped security personnel identify a suspected location associated with the abductors.

The operation, however, reportedly encountered additional security challenges after explosive devices were said to have been planted around the suspected hideout. This necessitated the deployment of specialised high-velocity tactical vehicles to support the advance of the security teams.

The eventual rescue at Amakohia Ubi came after the prolonged operation, bringing hope to the families who had spent several days awaiting news of their loved ones.

The police have not indicated that the operation is over, as efforts are reportedly continuing to identify, track and arrest those responsible for the abduction.

The latest development also underscores the importance of coordinated security operations involving different agencies, particularly in situations requiring intelligence gathering, surveillance, tactical intervention and search-and-rescue capabilities.

The Force commended members of the public for their cooperation and support during the operation, stressing that collaboration between security agencies and citizens remains essential to confronting criminal activities.

While the rescue has brought relief, attention will now shift towards securing the arrest and prosecution of those allegedly responsible for the abduction.

The police authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that persons involved in the incident are brought before the appropriate authorities to face the law.

As investigations continue, the authorities are expected to provide further information on the circumstances surrounding the abduction, the rescue operation and any arrests made in connection with the incident.
