Brics Currency

Nigeria is indeed featured on the new BRICS currency, with its flag appearing on the mock-up design unveiled at the Kazan Summit in Russia.

Ekwutosblog gathered that this move has sparked interesting debates among Nigerians, especially considering the absence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima at the summit

The proposed BRICS currency aims to challenge the dominance of the US dollar in global finance, and Nigeria’s inclusion is seen as significant.

However, some critics have raised concerns about the representation of Nigeria’s official language on the currency, with the word “Nigeria” written in Hausa.

Key Implications of Nigeria’s Inclusion:

Increased Global Influence: Nigeria’s presence on the BRICS currency could enhance its global economic influence and reputation.

Economic Benefits: A BRICS currency could facilitate more efficient cross-border transactions and increased financial inclusion for Nigeria.

Diversification: Nigeria’s involvement in BRICS could reduce its dependence on the US dollar and promote economic diversification.

It’s essential to note that the development of the BRICS currency is still in its early stages, and many details are yet to be finalized ². Nonetheless, Nigeria’s feature on the currency mock-up design marks a significant step towards a potentially new global reserve currency.

Critics argue that fixing elections during Ramadan reflects poor judgment and a lack of sensitivity to Nigeria’s socio-religious realities. INEC has acknowledged the concerns and is undertaking consultations, with the possibility of seeking legislative intervention to adjust the dates.
