Tinubu Signs Amended Electoral Act

Published

on

President Tinubu on Wednesday signed the amendments to the 2022 Electoral Act into law, saying he had followed the debate on the document at the National Assembly closely.

He commended its leadership for managing the process very well, “to the extent there has been no confusion, no disenfranchisement of Nigerians, and that we are all going to see democracy flourish.”

According to the President, “the essence of democracy is to have very solid brainstorming discussions committed to national development, nation-building, and the stability of the nation.

“It is time that we have confidence in our system. No matter how good the system is, it’s managed by the people, promoted by the people, and the people finalise the results.”

Speaking on the ‘controversy’ preceding its passage, President Tinubu affirmed that humans still have a significant role to play in finalizing results, as computers can’t do everything, given that many aspects of the voting process are still largely manual.

“And when you look at the crux of various arguments, maybe Nigerians should question our broadband capability. How technically sound are we today? How technically sound will we be tomorrow in answering the call, whether in real time or not?

“And as long as you appear personally as a manual voter in any polling booth, a ballot paper is given to you manually. You decide in a corner and fingerprint the person you choose. You cast your vote without hindrance or interference.

“Ballots are subsequently counted manually. It’s just the arithmetic accuracy that is entered into it from easy thinking. It is still manual, essentially.

“The transmission of that manual result is what we’re looking at. And we need to avoid glitches, interference, and unnecessary hacking in this age of computer inquisitiveness. Nigeria will be there,” he said.

In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described today (Wednesday) as a truly significant day, with the two major religions commencing their fasting seasons.

He said the two chambers worked tirelessly on it for two years “to make sure that we met the right time, so that INEC can do the necessary procurements and bring out the right timetable for next year’s election.

“We have also ensured that we provided a lot of clauses in the amendment that will enable you to conduct free and fair elections in Nigeria that will be acceptable to the international community and all Nigerians, that will meet the yearnings and aspirations of all Nigerians as democrats.

He acknowledged that, though some members disagreed with the decision on the Bill, it was the beauty of democracy.

“At the end, we all came together, and this is the final product. As soon as you sign this, you will have made history as the first president to introduce electronic transmission of results from the polling units to the entire world.

“We have the IReV now, which is a portal for viewing. It allows you to see what is happening across all polling units. Even if you don’t have a network, shortly after that, if you take it to a networked location, it will sync, and people will still have the opportunity to view.

“So, we have made all the necessary inclusions to ensure that Nigerians are going to be happy, the international community will be happy, and it will make the elections also easy for INEC to do,” the Senate President said.

He commended Nigerians of all walks of life for their interest, cooperation, support, and prayers towards meeting their yearnings.

Also present at the signing ceremony were the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, his deputy, Benjamin Kalu, some principal officers of the National Assembly, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Sen. Basheer Lado.

Notorious Bandit Leader, Bello Turji Now An APC Member – Dalung

Published

on

A former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has accused the Federal Government of buying state institutions, including non-performing governors.

Dalung made the accusation at a protest against the Senate’s approval of both electronic transmission and manual collation of election results at the National Assembly on Tuesday.

He lamented that everyone has endorsed the federal government, adding that even notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has registered as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking during the protest, he said, “Is there anybody that is sidelined in Tinubu’s government? A government that is going about buying people. It has even bought non-performing governors to its side. Where does that government get the concept to sideline?

“A government that is desperately looking for people for endorsement. It has been endorsed by almost everybody. Bandits have even endorsed it. Bandit Turji has registered as an APC member.

“The governors are defecting. INEC may defect. The Supreme Court will defect. Police will defect. The Army will defect. Is it a desperate government that can sideline anybody? Not certainly, not at all. Is it a credible government that will set the boundaries for people and sideline? But this one that is already sinking, a sinking ship.”

Outrage As Nigerians React To Video Of APC Member Spraying Naira During Tinubu’s Adamawa Visit (Watch)

Published

on

A video capturing a woman spraying naira notes during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Adamawa State has ignited widespread outrage on social media, with many Nigerians accusing authorities of selectively enforcing laws against currency mutilation.

The incident occurred as popular Hausa musician Dauda Kahutu Rarara performed his latest song, ‘Omo Ologo’ (Child of Glory), in honor of the President.

In the circulating video, a yet-to-be-identified woman dressed in All Progressives Congress, APC, attire approached the stage and sprayed naira notes while the performance was ongoing.

She was later cautioned by another woman standing nearby, but the brief act quickly drew attention online after clips of the moment spread across social media platforms.

Several users on X criticised what they described as unequal application of the law.

One user @Clement C Mbanugo wrote: “I blame Nigerians for the arrogance of EFCC bandits. If those idiots come to arrest anybody in your area, make sure they don’t go back with their complete teeth.”

@Nigeria is my only country, said: “The law is meant for only the people that are not supporting APC. Mtcheeeew.”

@King Dave 3 commented: “It’s only in Nigeria spraying money is a crime, but you’re free to spray in front of President Tinubu. Everything is fine if you’re APC member.”

Other users also reacted. @CRT ekeh posted: “Dem no go see this one o,”

@CHUKWUEBUKA added: “The law no be for everybody.”

Some commenters compared the incident to previous cases where individuals were reportedly arrested or prosecuted over naira abuse.

@PETER OBI’s TRUMPETER claimed that while the woman was only cautioned, others had faced harsher consequences for similar acts.

@Emmanuel Benjamin argued that the reaction might have been different if supporters of opposition figures were involved, while @BIGI simply said: “Make them go arrest am nah.”

“””SHE IS NOT A MEMBER OF THE COMMITTEE AND WAS NOT INVITED TO THE BUDGET DEFENCE…. SHE AS USUAL IGNORANTLY CLAIMED THAT BEING FROM NORTH-CENTRAL NIGERIA, SHE OUGHT TO HAVE BEEN A MEMBER.” — SENATE COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN SENATOR ZAM DENIES SENATOR NATASHA. .. The Chairman of the Senate Committee on the North Central Development Commission (NCDC), Titus Zam, has dismissed claims by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan that she is a member of the committee, insisting that official records do not list her among its members. Zam, who represents Benue North-West in the Senate, made the clarification in Abuja while responding to allegations that the Kogi Central lawmaker’s name was deliberately omitted from the committee’s attendance register during a recent budget defence session.

According to him, the senator was neither appointed to the committee nor invited to participate in its proceedings. He explained that committee composition follows established Senate procedures designed to reflect federal character, noting that not all lawmakers from a particular geopolitical zone automatically become members of development commission panels. He further identified Isah Jibrin as the committee’s vice-chairman and Sunday Karimi as a serving member from Kogi State, adding that other north-central lawmakers, including Pam Mwadkon, are also not part of the NCDC committee.

Zam stated that the disagreement arose after the budget defence meeting had concluded, when Akpoti-Uduaghan reportedly visited his office to protest her exclusion.

He maintained that any grievances regarding committee appointments should be directed to the Senate Committee on Selection, which is responsible for assigning memberships.

The development has drawn attention within legislative circles, highlighting internal procedural disputes over committee representation in the upper chamber.
